    Personally, I’m able to differentiate btw the Amazon series and the books. I loved the series. Then I read the books (all of them), and while I was shocked at some of the differences, but ultimately view them as different stories altogether. Both enjoyable in their own rights.

    Please, don't destroy what was written. I understand that you need to change things a bit to bring it to the screen, but please for the love of all things created by the Creator, don't change it too much. I don't care that I already know the story.. Knowing it, and seeing it on screen are two different things. Also, do you all have plans to get this series out better than the others. The main core of WoT Fans began reading this series since the 90's when we were teenagers. Now, that original fan base is like, "Damn, I'll be 60 if I'm already dead before this show's over!" So I was wondering, are you gonna go with a traditional format and take over 13 years to do this series or will you do two seasons a year and, maybe, just maybe, the original fans like me who paid for, and supported this book series from the beginning a chance to see it fulfilled.

      Oh, you're definitely going to need a Narrator to speak the speeches that need to be spoken.. I suggest Morgan Freeman. That guy could make anything sound delicious. I'd say Hailey Steinfeld would be a great choice for Min Farshaw. That's up to you guys. She's a sporadic character so her new Marvel tv show shouldn't stop her from being Min. I was just seeing that Rosabell Laurenti Summers was a fan choice and it's a great choice. She's a great actress and she's very lovely with short hair like Min.

      Wait, wait, wait.. You can't put Rand in the same room with Lews Therin Telamon until he's told by Min that she saw him as two if I remember right. Rand was going completely crazy until he accepted that Lewis was real.. At that point he started to gain a semblance of peace knowing he was reborn and not just some crazy channeler. You should show the Wolves as it's written. Jumbles of Images, flashes, smells, feelings and have Perrin explain to others. The only time I'd show them actually conversing is when Perrin's in the dream. Matt's easy, the Dice in his head with a hollow sound. Min. I'd show her ability like the book as well. She see's things. She doesn't always know what they mean but the one's she does always happens. Whispering Wind for Nynaeve.

    I think a cool way to do lews therin in a in the room kind of way would be to have the first couple of times when we here him talk, we see the figure of the the side, out of focus, and when rand or the camera turns to see him he is gone. Then after a few appearances he shows up for real. It would be a interesting way to show the growing insanity

    Love the panel, looking forward to the show. Regarding Lews Therin, I can kind of see them doing a Mr. Robot, but a disembodied voice would lend itself better to horror, if done right. Using a little of both approaches and going from mysterious to clearly-defined could also help show the progress of Rand’s mental.

    One of the greatest things that really assures me about the show is that not only is Rafe a super fan, but he has many great advisors and takes this advice to heart. This is not *just* his vision and it won't *just* be his own view on the books. It is a collaboration of the closest people to the original author and the most knowledgeable people about the books who are also fans. I think that many adaptations have been poisoned by 3 things in particular: 1. A single view on the original which will clash with many people. 2. A decision (often by the studio) to obviously inject "modern" themes or adjust it too much to hit as many people as possible. For instance by changing characters so the evil characters are not "as evil" because people like this character or that they remove difficult themes (such as slavery in WoT) because it doesn't take a complete and opposite stance against it. Grey areas are fun! 3. Trying to adapt it to a certain audience who are not the potential audience of the original story. Examples are language, always beautiful actors where it makes no sense, teenage problems injected where it doesn't belong, PG that completely changes the mood and tone, etc. Don't get me wrong, these things can be included to a degree but it needs to be done in a way that doesn't destroy something that is already great. We can handle dark! We can handle morally grey areas! We don't need the show to take a defining stance for us because that very much ruins the interesting part of a show/movie. That said, I am confident that Rafe and Co. will do it justice from what I have seen and I keep getting more confident about the show.

    I disagree with the last point Jess and thom made. If they are going to have that relationshiip in the show they need to make it what it was. That relationship was never a BDSM relationship. Right there you are doing what a lot of people dont want the show to do is put Mordern morality / Coversations into a series that does no exist. This is obviously an abusive relationship. anything other then that is changing a fundamental aspect of the books and a msg RJ wanted to show. I agree with you guys though the way it's done needs to be way better. But i believe it can be done better and i know that people are sensative to this topic but that should not stop it from being told.

    As to the question about Lews Therin being handled in the show, I would love to see him actually cast as a role and have him interact with Rand throughout the show. In the season that he starts appearing to Rand, he would actually be there in the room addressing him, and the audience that isn't aware of how the books go should assume he's a real character interacting with Rand and not notice that the other characters aren't addressing him. Rand not realizing he's hallucinating at first would be so much more powerful if it's revealed at the end of that season that nobody else can see or hear Lews Therin. Watching some part of him crumble when Min's like "wtf is Lews Therin? Rand, who are you talking to?" could be such an effective moment to pull back the curtain and reveal that Rand has been an unreliable character for that entire season and the audience not aware of the books should feel just as duped as Rand and understand how it would feel to be misled by unreliable senses. HBO's "The Leftovers" did this masterfully throughout the entire show by bringing back dead characters to kind of "haunt" the remaining ones who were mentally unstable, which allowed those characters to act as an external manifestation of psyche and conscience that could spell out the internal struggle that the main character was undergoing but unwilling to speak about.

    THIS MAT AND TYLIN DISCUSSION IS RIDICULOUS: He is a self-denying character. He repeatedly says he hates battle - but he does it because he secretly likes it! He doesn't want to lead - but he does it and likes it! He doesn't want to marry - but he does it and likes it! JUST LIKE THESE EXAMPLES...Mat doesn't really understand and can't admit to himself how much he likes the game Tylin (something they both understand but don't say because then the illusion and fantasy of the game is lost) played with him until its over. He complains about it the same way an old uncle of mine did about helping people until there was a fire in a home and he wouldn't stop going in to rescue children...

    51:10 Logic wins out huh ? That's funny I've given page numbers, quotes, and links to all my evidence to support my argument and usually they come back with a link to some obscure science paper on why it could be possible, no matter that we were discussing what was written by the author, not what was a possibility. And those that are lacking in logic are the very ones purporting that Emonds Field was a diversity wonderland. Sorry, it isn't now nor has it ever been, Jordan wrote it that way, I guess people have no respect for authors works anymore, as long as they twist and wrangle it into something that checks the right boxes then it's fair game.

      Hieroglyph777 one thing i have been thinking about is the scene where Rand meets Elaida for the first time. She pushes back his sleeves to check is skin colour. Nobody would do that for a white guy growing up in a black town, but they would do it for a ginger who claims to be from Spain or Morocco. I do not mind the castings, but ppl just need to admit it was done to be inclusive, aka have ppl of colour be the main characters. I wish at least they had cast Matt as a non-white, just to have some consistency.

    • @Hieroglyph777
      @Hieroglyph777 4 роки тому

      @@MoDa87 No argument from me there, it's hard to imagine what Jordan meant to do with that scene and yet later on described Egwene as white. I get what you're saying though, it does sound like he gave Rand a pale complexion where the sun didnt touch him and Elaida hinted that the TR people were different. And yea i agree, they cast POC into the emonds field bunch to be inclusive and PC, the new age Lefty's hate to admit that, not sure why.

    I think my definition of gut punch must be different. I don't feel like the KoD scene with the Ogier is a gut punch at all. Its a really cool scene, and would probly make my list of top 10 or even 5 most awesome scenes in the series, but not emotional enough to call a gut punch imo. I would have went with Hopper's (2nd) death personally or Rand choking Min but Rand almost killing Tam is a good choice too. Probably should have just said plotline instead of scene for that last question. Both of their choices are good but I might choose the Morgase subplot over both of them as something to eliminate.

    Great discussion, very enjoyable! Extra cool that Rafe was able to join the panel. Some reflections in view of what was said and in general: The Wheel of Time-story is very intricate (also with much internal dialogue), therefore more difficult to adapt to the screen than many other stories, and needs to be dealt with delicately. The producers should keep in mind that Rand is the grand hero of the story (who has to go through hell and back emotionally and otherwise) so please treat his mental condition (cfr. Lews Therin/voices in his head) in the tv-series with delicacy, tact and care so he does not turn into a 'raving lunatic' before our eyes, that would demean the character and Robert Jordan's vision. Fandom will often be divided between those more 'book-conservative' (i.e. keep the tv-dramatization as close as possible to the books, at least when it comes to main events and characters, don't drop or change important things) and those more 'book-liberal' (i.e. a tv-dramatization/adaptation is a different medium and the story can and will be different, it is up to the producers/director to choose his interpretation on screen) and both views need to be accepted and respected imo. The Admins of Wheel of Time Communities also need to remember that critical voices are not necessarily 'jerks'/'trolls' i.e. a fan who believes a white caucasian character in the books should be the same in the tv-series and reacts if it is done differently in the tv-series is not a racist. This is a challenging but important balance that Admins ought to keep in mind as more fans will appear (as the panel mentioned) awaiting the coming tv-series, to allow fact-based critical fan-comment, which is not just 'trolling', but also to moderate to keep things civil (keep the true 'jerks' out). As was also said in the panel, people will have different views since people are different and have different mental pictures having read the books and therefore different expectations (those who have not read the books will come with a 'clean slate' of course, same as was the case with 'Game of Thrones'). Many lovers of Robert Jordan's books will approach the tv-series with a mixture of excitement and trepidation; to echo Rafe's thoughts: 'don't screw this up'. Hopefully as more information is released about cast, filming etc most concerns will be put to rest. Let us hope the tv-series does this fantastic fantasy-saga justice and honours Robert Jordan's legacy. Stay safe, everyone!
